The ability to transport a drug molecule through the skin is controlled by the dipole moment in a solution of the drug.

Substances which go through the skin readily have approximately the same dipole moment, and HSP has developed solutions that enable managing for the dipole moment so that the drug can be absorbed through the skin.

The solvents used are ethanol and fatty alcohols, a total of 99%. The last percentage of the solvent consists of a proprietary mixture of 15-20 naturally occurring substances that are chosen for purpose to impact the solution dipole moment. All of these substances are considered safe food additives or nutritional supplements and are defined as "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
